Our Herd
We currently raise a herd of around 80 yak. Our focus is on quality, foundation animals with excellent fiber, size, conformation and above all, temperament and personality. Almost all our animals are tame soon after birth. We focus on imprinting immediately and spend a lot of time with the calves.
We like big, solid framed animals that are elegant and powerful in appearance. Bulls should be masculine with an ample horn set, large frame and musculature, good fiber and calm personality. Our cows have been selected and raised for their personalities just as much as their appearance. We like them to be feminine, but with large, powerful bodies and sweet, personable dispositions. We breed for fiber, size, milk production and friendliness to promote the most multi-purpose and beautiful animal.
We also appreciate that yak is a subsistence species in Asia. In breeding terms this means that they are not bred intentionally for any specific phenotype. While the genetic pool in the US is smaller, we work to promote a diversity of phenotypes and bloodlines to ensure resilient offspring and help promote the greater yak population in North America.Â
